Inspirational acts unfold every day and many Newman University students make time to help others, even in the midst of their studies, jobs and extracurricular activities.

Student Life is starting the monthly “Tell Me Something Good” initiative, which recognizes Newman students who are making a difference. This two-part project highlights one individual student as well as one group of students each month for their outstanding work or service.

All faculty, staff and students are invited to submit monthly nominations for a student and/or group of students who deserve to be recognized. Nominations will then be reviewed by a committee to determine which student group and individual student deserve the spotlight for the following month.

“We have students who volunteer at clinics, who work with the homeless community and it’s just kind of an everyday thing that they’ve done,” Vanessa Rials, director of multicultural engagement and campus life, said.

“I think sometimes they underestimate the impact that they can make, but this is our chance to say, ‘Hey, let’s pause. You’re working on something bigger than yourself, which goes hand in hand with our mission and vision here at Newman.’”

Recognizing positive forces

The Tell Me Something Good initiative gives each member of the Newman community the chance to help recognize their peers who are making a positive difference. Rials believes that this type of recognition can both inspire others, and encourage the featured students to continue building on the good they have already done.

“I think that this is an opportunity to help the students see that they are contributing to our mission to transform society for the better,” Rials said. “It can be validating to hear that you’re making a difference and it can keep you going.”

She added, “I encourage all faculty, staff and students to nominate someone and be part of that awesome process.”

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2022 spring semester.
