Transfer Thursdays offer one-stop-shop for transfer students

Dec 10, 2015

Today, Dec. 10, kicks off the start of a brand new admissions program, Transfer Thursdays.

The program, which runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, will be a way for transfer students to get paperwork done, set up tours and see the campus, talk with admissions and financial aid advisors, meet with faculty and much more.

Amanda Booth, assistant director of admissions events, said Transfer Thursdays are meant to be a one-stop-shop for incoming transfer students and it will allow them to have a full look at Newman.

“We thought we’d create a little more personal experience for each of our transfer visitors coming to check out Newman,” Booth said. “On Transfer Thursdays these students can sign up for two-hour sessions, and we’re developing a custom schedule for each student based on what they’re wanting to get out of the campus experience. Some transfer students want to take a tour, some don’t. Some want to meet with Financial Aid, some just want to meet with Admissions. So it’s just more personalized.”

In previous years, Booth said, visiting transfer students were subject to large group information sessions based on their majors.

“Transfer students are different than incoming freshmen,” she said. “They have different demands and so we want to let them get what they want out of this experience. That’s the concept of Transfer Thursdays.”

On these days, various student ambassadors, faculty, advisors, Admissions staff and Financial Aid staff will be on hand for visiting transfer students to meet. There will be eight different two-hour sessions available to the students.

Booth said they want to have Transfer Thursdays at least once a month in the future. The next two months’ dates have been set for Jan. 14 and Feb. 11.
