Gerber Institute offers first presentation for lecture series “Perspectives on Immigration”

The Gerber Institute for Catholic Studies at Newman University will present a lecture in the lunch and learn series “Perspectives on Immigration.” The lecture will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Oct. 15 in the Tarcisia Roths, ASC Alumni Center in the Dugan Library and Campus Center. The lecture “First-Person Perspectives” will be the first presentation of the series and will consist of panel discussions reflecting the many perspectives that can be taken on the topic of immigration and immigration policy reform. NU Men’s Basketball takes on WSU Dec. 19

The Newman University Men’s Basketball Team will meet Wichita State University in a regular season contest scheduled for 7:05 p.m., Monday, Dec. 19 at Koch Arena in Wichita. The Jets and the Shockers have previously played exhibition games; this is the first regular season game between the two teams.

Candlelight ceremony for Mental Illness Awareness Week set for Oct. 2 at Newman University

Event features guest speaker Coach Mark Potter

The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Wichita, the Newman University School of Social Work and other Sedgwick County mental health service agencies are sponsoring a Mental Illness Awareness Week event at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 2 in the Dugan Library building at Newman University. The event is free and open to the public.

This candlelight ceremony event strives to reduce stigma and educate people about mental illness. The theme for the candlelight ceremony is Changing Attitudes-Changing Lives. The master of ceremonies for the ceremony is Tracy Cassidy from B98 FM Radio. The evening starts at 6:30 p.m. with an opening reception and exhibits, followed by a program at 7 p.m. and the candlelight ceremony at 8 p.m.

Alumna and award-winning author Clare (Sander) Vanderpool to visit Newman April 6

The National Alumni Association will host a reception to honor and congratulate Clare (Sander) Vanderpool ’87 from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6 in the Tarcisia Roths, ASC Alumni Center inside Dugan Library on the Newman campus. Vanderpool is the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Newbery Medal for her first published novel, Moon Over Manifest. Read More…

Spring Semester classes begin Jan. 18

The Newman campus is currently open following the Christmas break. Spring 2011 semester classes begin Jan. 18, and there is still time to enroll. The last day to add or drop first 8-week classes is Jan. 21. The deadline for late registration for semester classes is Jan. 24. Additional fees apply for enrollment in semester classes on this date.
