It wasn’t until junior Alpha Magafu’s interview for the ASC Service Award that she realized Newman University was founded by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC) sisters — the same founders as her high school.

“I had no idea Newman University was their college until the day of my scholarship interview with Sister Marsha Wilson, ASC. It was quite a surprise that I happened to have attended one of their schools in Africa,” Magafu said.

Magafu graduated from Maria De Mattias Secondary School in Tanzania, and is in her 10th year of education from the ASC sisters.

Magafu said she is very thankful to have the connection and experience with the ASC sisters by attending both Newman and Maria De Mattias Secondary School.

“Most people have no idea the impact that the ASC sisters are making around the world, especially in developing countries out there. I feel blessed to have experienced it firsthand in Africa and I cannot appreciate them enough,” Magafu said. “I pray that God would continue to bless them abundantly, that way they can continue to bless others each day.”

Now, as a junior at Newman University, Magafu is studying pre-med with a minor in sports medicine.

“I’d say it is such a blessing to be here and I’ve seen it firsthand that the ASC sisters work really hard to provide quality education,” Magafu said.

On campus at Newman, Magafu is involved in several different organizations. She is currently the Newman Student Government Association senate leader, vice president for the Pan-African Student Organization, an international student ambassador for the Multicultural Leadership Organization and a general member of many other clubs as well. She also is a student worker for admissions

Through all of her involvement on campus, Magafu said there are some faculty and staff she is has a special connection with.

“For instance, the amazing folks in the academic affairs office, admissions, telecommunications and almost all the professors that teach me,” Magafu said.

Outside of the classroom, Magafu likes various activities and hopes to one day be a doctor.

“I enjoy classical music, acrylic painting and weightlifting,” Magafu said. “After graduating, I plan to go to medical school and pursue my dream of becoming a doctor.”
