Golfer Chase Martel took first place at the Konzem-Capra Invitational March 18, becoming Newman University’s first No. 1 overall finisher at a tournament since the university joined Division II.

As stated in an article by Newman University Athletics, “Martel had two of his best rounds of the year, shooting a 73 in the first round and scoring a team-low 72 in the second round. On the final hole of the tournament, Martel made a birdie to take home first place by one stroke. Martel ended the tournament with an overall score of 145.”

Winning the tournament was a dream come true for the Raymore, Missouri native; Martel started playing golf when he was just 6 years old.

“Golf has had a very positive impact on my life as it has brought me many new friends and it allows me to travel and compete at new places,” Martel said. “I feel like I am performing very well right now, and (winning the tournament) was my first collegiate victory. It shows that all of my hard work in our offseason has really paid off.”

Martel was drawn to Newman University for its business management degree and the chance to make an impact on the golf team.

At first it was nerve-wracking to attend a school of people he had never met, but Martel was given a warm welcome and has met many kind individuals at Newman. Plus, he has only gotten closer to attaining his dream job as a post-graduate.

“I want to continue playing golf at a high level and teach others the game,” he said. “I love being on the golf course and helping others learn and excel at the game would be really fun.”

Martel would like to thank his parents for pushing him to be the best he can be.

“I would also like to thank all my coaches who have helped me throughout my life to get to this level,” he added.

Men’s golf competed at the Showdown at Shangri-La Country Club in Oklahoma April 1-2, finishing in 17th place. Martel had the best overall round for Newman in the tournament, scoring a 73 in the first round.

Martel is excited to continue pushing himself to excel in the team’s final tournaments and MIAA Conference Championship April 15-17.
