The Newman women’s basketball team made its first-ever nationally-televised game one to remember, picking up a 69-51 win over Heartland Conference rival St. Edward’s in front of a national television audience on the CBS College Sports Network. Just better than 1,050 fans were on hand in Fugate Gymnasium to witness the win.

Evening Classes Canceled

December 2010 nursing grads score big
A full 100 percent of Newman Fall 2010 nursing graduates passed the national licensure exam. That’s the second time in two years, and a record for the Newman University nursing program!

Shortened class schedule for ecumenical service Jan. 27
Classes will be shortened for an ecumenical service scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, in St. John’s Chapel on the Newman campus. The adjusted class times are 8-8:50 a.m., 9-9:50 a.m., and 10-10:50 a.m. The entire Newman community is invited to participate.

Newman alumna Clare (Sander) Vanderpool ’87 has been selected to receive the 2011 John Newbery Medal for her book Moon Over Manifest, an historical fiction novel for middle-school readers.

Due to inclement weather and the strong possibility of slippery and dangerous roads, Newman University will close at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan.10. Newman officials advise everyone to be careful driving home today and throughout the week.
Chemistry faculty hosts workshop for Diocesan high school math and science teachers
Newman University’s chemistry faculty hosted 22 math and science teachers from Wichita-area Diocesan schools on Jan. 3 for a teaching-learning workshop. The workshop shared and reviewed various software currently available at no cost to math and science teachers for use in their classrooms. The workshop was held on the Newman campus.

‘Rent-a-Troub’ to help send Newman singers to Carnegie Hall
Newman University’s select vocal ensemble The Troubadours has been invited for the third consecutive year to sing in New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. To help raise the approximately $2,000 per student needed for the March 10-14 trip, the group is staging a special service called “Rent-a-Troub.”
NU celebrates Fall 2010 graduates
Newman University held Fall 2010 Baccalaureate on Friday, Dec. 10 and Fall 2010 Commencement on Saturday, Dec. 11. A total of 173 students earned their degrees, including 32 who received associate’s degrees, 99 who received bachelor’s degrees and 42 who earned master’s degrees.
University closes Dec. 23 for Christmas break
Newman University offices will close at noon on Thursday, Dec. 23 for the Christmas holiday. Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011. The next issue of Up to the Minute will be Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011. The Spring 2011 semester begins Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011.

Newman University to hold Fall 2010 graduation activities Dec. 10-11
Newman University will hold the Fall 2010 Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement ceremony on Dec. 10 and Dec. 11, respectively. The university will also honor graduating nursing students, and will award honorary degrees to three distinguished members of the Wichita community.
Thanksgiving break Nov. 24 – 28
Thanksgiving break begins at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at Newman University. During the break, no classes will be held and offices will be closed. Classes resume and offices reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 29.
